Peter Maher
Group Country Manager, Southeast Asia and Australasia
Peter Maher is the group country manager, Southeast Asia and Australasia for Visa Worldwide Pte. Limited located in Singapore effective 1 April 2011. He is responsible for the business operations, strategic development, stakeholder relations, and business performance of his regions in Australia, New Zealand, Southeast Asia and the South Pacific. Maher assumed the group country manager title for Southeast Asia in 2009.
Before assuming country responsibilities, Maher was the head of processing solutions in Asia Pacific, where he was instrumental in extending Visa’s processing capabilities to facilitate the introduction of Visa’s card programs to its clients across the region. In his tenure, Visa’s first issuer processing business, Visa Processing Services, was launched in December 2008. This enabled Visa to extend its processing capabilities in some of the fastest-growing payments regions in the world.
Maher also led Asia Pacific’s Risk Management team, which included payment security and fraud risk management. He was previously responsible for the region’s chip implementation program and helped to develop national chip programs in a number of markets across Asia Pacific.
Prior to joining Visa in 2001, Maher worked with Standard Chartered Bank where he held a number of senior management positions. His portfolio from 1992 to 2001 included corporate banking, risk management, corporate debt restructuring, finance, treasury operations and group financial planning. Maher’s responsibilities at the bank saw him based in a number of countries, including Bahrain, Dubai, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and the United Kingdom. Maher began his career as a manager in the audit and business advisory division of Arthur Anderson in London.
Maher is a graduate of Trinity College, Dublin and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland.
