Security and Trust
As an industry leader, Visa creates an environment of partnership, fosters broad engagement and promotes accountability around securing sensitive consumer data. We work hand in hand with the larger payments community, from cardholders to merchants, financial institutions to service providers, regulators to law enforcement. Our collective success in maintaining the trust and confidence of consumers comes from this ability to work together, share information and coordinate our defenses.
Trust in Every Transaction
Ensuring Visa payments are convenient, reliable and secure are Visa’s highest priorities. These priorities are critical to maintaining and strengthening cardholder trust in every Visa transaction — whether buying groceries or withdrawing local currency while traveling abroad.
Today’s criminals — data thieves, hackers, phishers and dumpster divers — are insidious because, beyond mere money, they steal peace of mind. And at Visa, nothing is more important than trust in the system.
Layers of Defense
Attacks can come from many directions, utilizing many tools and tactics. Visa protects each link within our control and works with others in the payment chain to ensure there is no single point of failure. Our multilayer fraud prevention system ensures that, in the rare event criminals succeed in breaching one layer, the doors beyond are locked.
Visa has invested heavily in advanced fraud-fighting technologies, and we continue to develop and deploy new and innovative programs that protect cardholders. Visa’s efforts have kept global fraud rates near historic lows, enabling cardholders to use Visa with confidence. In fact, with technological innovations and advances in risk management, fraud rates have declined by more than two-thirds in the past two decades.
Investment and Innovation
Visa’s security strategy relies on multiple layers of protection. From anti-counterfeit measures to neural networks that analyze each transaction in real-time, Visa takes a total-systems approach to fraud prevention.
Visa fraud prevention focuses on:
- Securing the payment environment to protect card data and render it useless in the hands of criminals.
- Managing fraud and protecting cardholders with Zero Liability1.
- Maintaining trust through merchant and cardholder education and industry leadership.
- Creating an environment of partnership by promoting industry engagement and accountability.
