BBVA has introduced an innovative feature in its banking app that allows customers to personalise their virtual Visa cards using Image Playground powered by Apple Intelligence. The feature is already available in Spain for customers with virtual cards and an iPhone 15 Pro or later and will soon be extended to physical cards.
Apple Intelligence’s Image Playground enables users to quickly and easily create unique images on their iPhone. This joint project between BBVA and Visa meets all applicable technical and security standards.
“For decades, the image on a bank card has been generic and uniform for all customers. At BBVA, we wanted to break with that idea, putting the customer at the centre: now they can personalise the design of their card using the power of Apple Intelligence, giving it a unique style that matches their tastes,” explains Javier López Chicote, Head of Innovation for the Retail Client Solutions area at BBVA.
The process is simple and fully integrated into the BBVA app. Customers just need to go to the cards section, select the Visa card they wish to personalise, and either use one of their own images as inspiration or describe the image they want to create. Image Playground will generate several proposals, and the selected design will be instantly updated in the wallet section of the BBVA app.
There are no limits to the number of images users can create, although designs are subject to certain restrictions and agreed uses by both entities to protect copyright and prevent inappropriate content.
“Visa has been innovating alongside BBVA for more than five decades to offer safer and more personalised payment experiences — from launching the first Visa card in Spain in 1971 to introducing the first contactless payments. This new feature marks another step in our shared innovation journey, giving users the power of Apple Intelligence to decide exactly how they want their payment method to look,” says Eduardo Prieto, Country Manager of Visa in Spain.
In this initial phase, Image Playground within the BBVA app is available for customers with virtual cards and an iPhone 15 Pro or later. Very soon, this functionality will be extended to physical cards, which customers will be able to design and have delivered directly to their homes.
This initiative is part of BBVA’s strategy to integrate artificial intelligence into its value proposition. The new app the bank launched in May incorporates intelligent features such as personalised shortcuts, habit-based recommendations, simplified transactions, and an intelligent financial assistant — all aimed at making it easier for customers to manage their finances.
